About Us

Our group (Chedoke Browlands Community) was formed as a result of a community. Planning and Economic Development public meeting on June 10th 2010.  In the absence of a formal neighborhood association, a group of people have come together with a common interest and passion to protect and preserve as much of the Browlands as possible.  We are not so naive as to believe that we would be successful if we pursued a “no development” agenda – rather, we strive to protect the Browlands and minimize the development impact on our community now and for future generations.

We are a small group of ten who bring to the table a variety of professional backgrounds, talents and resources.  The group is not incorporated but have appointed a President, and a Treasurer and assigned roles to members eg Communication, Fund Raising, Site Planning etc.  These functions are critical to our success.

Protecting our Browlands is a difficult, complex and expensive process  to undertake for a small group of volunteers. We care deeply about our community, the escarpment, watershed, and protecting our green space. What do you envision for our community?  Your support will make a difference.

We were successful and raised $5000 to commission a land use planner to review the Browlands development proposal on our behalf. This is just the beginning; it is likely we will require the services of a lawyer as well.

Recently, Deanlee (the land owner) filed an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board with the intent of having the Board approve the high density land development proposal.

It is critical for our community to convince City Council that the Deanlee proposal is not the best interest for our community, that a comprehensive land use plan that will preserve and protect our Browlands and green space is warranted.

    We recently moved to the area on August 3rd of this year. We have waited two years to find the house of our dreams for our family in this particular neighbourhood. This west mountain location has been our number one choice since starting our family. That said, we wanted a home, with mature trees and a personality, not a new house with no backyard or trees. We are shocked and disturbed to find out the cities plan for this area. We have talked in great length about the impact on the neighbourhood and agree with all previous points made. We would like to join in the fight to protect our neighbourhood and “keep it scenic”. Please contact us and let us know what we can do to help. The traffic consultant hired by the developer (hard to imagine there is no conflict of interest) has told us that there would be no significant increase in traffic with the addition of 700 units to the area. Saying that traffic calming solutions such as traffic circles will limit problems. I perceive it as making things more difficult for people who live on Scenic to leave there house because there will be limited breaks in traffic.

    I hope that the city hears the voices of the people and realized the addition of so many units to the area goes against the culture of the area and is definitely not what the people want.

    The destruction ever decreasing wetlands and parkland green space in any community is criminal at best. Even contemplating such an act , without careful in depth studies and community involvement shows the lack of true leadership and foresight in your Civic leaders and planners. It is my guess that none of these ‘Leaders’ reside in this community and have ‘no vested interest’ . Unless….well

    As a neighbourhood resident living in between 3 developments, I’ve sent my concerns via email to:
    “As a resident of Ward 8, I would like to thank you for providing us with information on the development of 555 Sanatorium Road.

    I would like to put forth a few items that should be taken into consideration with respect to the development:

    As my family & I are located between two current areas being reviewed by the city for urban development; Chedoke Browlands and 555 Sanatorium road, will the overall effects of the 2 developments be considered together with respect to the following impacts to the area:

    a) Traffic Impact – increased traffic and existing road difficulties i.e.) Student buses currently unable to turn left out of Columbia College (taken from the City of Hamilton website)
    b) Environmental Impact -displacement of existing wildlife
    c) Water/waste-water management issues – flooding at the corner of Sanatorium & Sanatorium (at Idylwild & across from Holbrook baseball diamond) (again website)
    d) An (unconfirmed) estimate of over 800 properties in a concentrated area with existing flooding issues.(City website)

    In addition to the approx 800 units in the area, that is not including the current construction of Columbia college residence.

    By dividing up the 3 separate developments and reviewing each development on its own “appears” to be insignificant. However when combined the big picture identifies
    significant problems or “challenges” which can be perceived both positive and negative. I am relying on the city to provide the positive aspects of not only developing 555 Sanatorium,
    but also the Chedoke Browlands, in addition to the present construction of the Columbia College residence.

    I would be displeased if the appeal to the city is an increase in property tax revenue. Job creation would be short term at best. I have read meeting minutes with respect to the flooding in this area as well as poor roads in need of repair and lack of sidewalks and it appears that the city is currently aware of the issues in the area but chose not to invest in the area to correct the existing problems. To add over 800 residences will compact this issue and result in greater financial cost to the
    resident of Hamilton and perhaps more so the ward 8 residents.
